Stockholm Motet Choir

Stockholm Motet Choir (SMK) is a Swedish independent choir of mixed voices with a broad repertoire, actively seeking cooperation with different actors on the Swedish music scene. The choir performs in churches and other well known scenes, such as Stockholm Concert Hall and Nybrokajen 11.

The members all have trained voices and also have extensive experience in choir singing. SMK’s main director since 2011 is Erik Uddunge. Erik took over after Björn Paulson who conducted the choir for five years. Guest conductors during the years have been many, including Lone Larsen, Eric Ericson, Pär Fridberg, Cecilia Rydinger-Alin, Mika Eichenholz, Gösta Ohlin and Mats Nilsson.

SMK was founded in 1972 by Stefan Sköld under the name of St. Jacob’s Youth Choir, which changed to St. Jacob Motet choir a few years later. During the first 18 years the choir was associated with St. Jacob’s Church in Stockholm. In January 1990 the choir chose to become an independent ensemble, at the time under the lead of Per Borin. In 1997 the name was changed to Stockholm Motet Choir.
Throughout the years, SMK has performed most of the bigger pieces for choir. In the last couple of years performances include The Passions of St. John and St Mathew (Bach), Messiah (Handel) together with Stockholm Baroque Orchestra, and the Creation (Haydn) together with Stockholm Sinfonietta. Other memorable performances include Mahlers 8th symphony, Messa da Requiem (Verdi), Ein Deutsches Requiem (Brahms) and Orff’s Carmina Burana.

The larger works are mixed with à capella concerts, or together with smaller instrumental ensembles and with soloists. The choir has done several radio performances and made original performances of “Rama”, a work for mixed choir and electronic sounds, by Rolf Enström, and August Strindbergs Chrysaetos set to music by Sven-David Sandström, and B Tommy Anderssons’ music to Shakespeare’s Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day. SMK has also done ground breaking work in performing the first ever Bossa Nova concert for choir, together with Jazz pianist Mathias Algotsson, featuring musical arrangements of well known Bossa songs for choir by SMK’s current director Björn Paulson.

The choir goes on tours on a regular basis, in Sweden and abroad. Recent tours abroad have gone to France, Belgium and Germany.
