Stockholm Motet Choir, Sweden

Stockholm Motet Choir (SMK) is a Swedish independent choir for mixed voices founded in 1972 by Stefan Skold under the name of Jacob’s Youth/Motet Choir. During the first 18 years the choir was associated with St. Jacob’s Church in Stockholm. During that time it established itself as one of the top choirs in Stockholm. In January 1990 the choir choose to become an independent ensemble.

The members all have trained voices and also have extensive experience singing in a choir. SMK has two directors, Olof Boman and Sonny Jansson. Together they share the artistic leadership of the choir. Olof Boman (born in 1973) and Sonny Jansson (born in 1954) are both visionaries and constantly give the choir new musical challenges. SMK has performed with Swedish guest conductors such as Eric Ericson and Mats Nilsson.

SMK has a broad repertoire that includes many different musical styles. The choir performs in churches and other performance facilities. SMK has a working relationship with the Stockholm Concert Hall and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Stockholm.

In the past the choir has commissioned and performed two pieces, “Rama” for mixed choir and audiotape by Rolf Enstrom and August Strindberg’s “Chrysaetos” set to music by Sven David Sandstrom.

A partial list of past performances includes Poulenc’s “Gloria” at Stockholm Concert Hall, Verdi’s “Requiem”,  Britten’s “Rejoice in the Lamb”, Ellington’s “Sacred Concerts”, and Orff’s “Carmina Burana”. In June of 2000 SMK sang with soprano Monserrat Caballet and a week later the choir was invited by the French Ministry of Culture to sing at the Louvre during the celebration of Fête de la Musique. In the Spring of 2001 the choir performed Bach’s “The Passion of St. John” accompanied by the Stockholm Baroque Ensemble. In the Winter of 2001–2002 the choire performed Martin’s “Mass” for double choir and a Venetian multi-choir music program. A CD recording is planned.
